"Smorgon" bagels

Smorgon was once famous for its bagels. The bagels were backed in a special ovens big and small, with and without poppy seeds. Smorgon bagels were sold not only at local markets, but also in Vilnius, Poland. They were known in all of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. They were also promoted by Gypsies who toured Europe with trained bears. The creators of the exhibition made sure that in the bakery visitors could see small hand-made mill-stones, boxes for flour, a dish for leaven, a sieve for sifting flour, wooden paddles with which bread was baked. The recipe has been lost, and we can learn only from the literature that they were so delicious and wonderful that they could not dry for several weeks. By the way, Smorgon bagels were especially popular at Vilna Kaziuk festival.
